Kim Marks ('98) (and fiance!)

Kim has some exciting news to share:

"This last spring, the Lord brought a wonderful Christian man into my life. His name is Marcel Petruţiu (said Mar-chel Pe-trut-ziu). You can read our story below from Marcel."

A Note from Marcel:

"Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pacea Domnului (God bless you!). Let me introduce myself. I am a Romanian who grew up in Oradea, Romania. My family has been attending Maranatha Baptist Church (a BMM church plant) for the past two years, but I wasn’t there because I was in the United States.

"I lived in the States for four years while Kim was living in Romania for 4 years. After I returned to Romania, I met this wonderful lady. Actually we were introduced by Maranatha’s pastor, Rev. Valentine Ţenţ. During the time we spent together, we realized that our personalities complemented each other and we believed that the Lord would like us to spend the rest of our lives together serving Him.

"On the 3rd of January, Kim’s parents are coming to Romania and together with my family and Pastor Valentine, we will celebrate our engagement with a traditional Romanian engagement dinner. The wedding will be on May 17, 2009 at Golgotha Baptist Church (Oradea, Romania) where I grew up. After our wedding, we plan on coming to the States for a short visit to celebrate our marriage with family and friends and to meet you, Kim’s faithful supporters.

"We believe the Lord would have us to continue in full-time missionary service. I have a desire to finish my nursing degree so we can help suffering people through a medical ministry. During my schooling, we plan to continue serving the Lord with the BMM Romanian team. We know that it’s not going to be easy, but we trust you will pray for us as we follow our Great God. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year."

John Voorhis ('08) (and Sam and "new addition")

John says, "we are doing good here in ole TX. I have been working for Chrysler Financial for five weeks in the remarketing department and Sam just got a job as a teacher for a pre-school. We love it down here. (the weather is great!:) We joined a church here a month ago and we did a puppet show for the kids this past Sunday. We are now looking at a duplex to purchase for us to live in one side and rent the other side (the beginning of our real estate investing also). The Lord has been so good!"

World Championship of Brownies

'Twas the day before finals and all through the Stevens' house ... well, never mind.

Senior business student, Richard Anderson, challenged Professor Mark Stevens to a contest for the world's best tasting brownie. Now, here, on your own MBBC Business Alumni blog you can enjoy a blow-by-blow account of the dual.

On Sunday, December 14, 2008, judges Sue Kurschner, Laurie Pfaffe, and Judy and Dave Lingle assembled for their most serious deliberations.

Early on, Richard looked worried, but in the end who won? It's hard to tell, isn't it.

Vince ACCEPTS the Challenge...Runs Test Mile

...he got 22.8 mpg!

His conscience, James Bingham (also a freshman in Introduction to Business), advised him not to claim that he had already run a mile in 22.8 minutes!

Dr. Pfaffe Throws Down the White Board Marker

But why did he throw down the white board marker? Reportedly, he doesn't own a gauntlet to throw down.

It's all about Vince Pardo, freshman student in Dr. Pfaffe's Introduction to Business class and the-straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back event that occurred at the annual Department of Business Christmas open house at Professor Ron Miller's home on December 9. After a humiliating loss in pool and a crushing defeat in Wii Baseball at the hands of Mr. Pardo, Dr. Pfaffe has challenged "the menace" to a one-mile run on or about the first day of Spring 2009.

Mr. Pardo has yet to respond to the white board marker challenge. More later (hopefully)!

Roger Chapman ('93)

Roger and Karie live in Bridgeport / Stamford, CT. Roger opines:

"We still have three children (without plans for additions). They’re probably getting to be about the ages your kids (Dr. Pfaffe's) were when I attended MBBC! Time waits for no one. I’m still at Edelman Leather. I just passed my tenth anniversary! I’ve been promoted to VP of Finance.

"The company was sold a year ago as a wholly owned subsidiary of Knoll, Inc., primarily an office systems manufacturer. That was a great (and stressful) experience. Aside from 2009 financial planning, I am currently working on opening a business office in Dublin Ireland for Edelman, another incredible experience. We’ll be up and running in January 2009. Karie and I will also take a little vacation in Ireland when I go back to open the office.

"After this semester I will have 5 courses remaining to complete my MBA. I may be able to finish that in 2009 depending upon course availability. I cannot wait. What a drain on my time and energy!

"Our little church is close to going to the town for our building permit. Lord willing we will begin building in the spring. Please pray that He allows us to do so, if He tarries."

Zach Zepke ('08)

Zach says:

"Sarah and I are still living in Watertown. I am working at Kayser Chrysler as a sales professional and enjoy it so far. I am probably going to be doing some of the financing work in the future, or at least training for it. It is nice to know that I can work at a dealership, and that I do not have to compromise my Christian standards.

"Being married is wonderful, and I am loving everyday that God has given me with Sarah. She has been a great encourager for me since things are going slow at work. God continues to provide for us on a daily basis."

Kim Marks ('98)

Here's a picture from last Christmas of Kim and the Rom (Gypsy) kids who she teaches in Ciumeghiu, Romania.

Kim believes that there are two qualities that are especially important to an aspiring Christian professional--"fierce integrity and a genuine interest in people."

"Your integrity is the one thing that slips away from you ever so slyly until you find yourself out in left field. Both in the US and outside in other countries, people have told others that they can trust me because of my track record of keeping my word and telling the truth. The few times I have decided to 'only disclose what is necessary' or 'soften the truth' I saw the results later when people were hurt not only by the truth, but also by those who withheld all the necessary details.

"We must value people. People respond when they see your genuine concern for THEIR interests. I have found that getting to know people and their families you raise morale, increase their work ethic and even open the door to share the Gospel with people. When we truly love our neighbors as ourselves, God is glorified, work gets done and we all feel better."

Rachel Roedel ('06)

Department of Business Assessment

In May 2008, Maranatha’s Department of Business completed an intense process of self-assessment. The Department’s learning outcomes incorporate knowledge, problem-solving, communications, and technology capabilities that graduates may apply as they begin their careers or pursue advanced education. Faculty members assessing student achievement seek to identify strengths and weaknesses in the Department’s quest to prepare Christian business professionals well for superior service in their homes, churches, and vocations.

The students exceeded most business knowledge objectives. Among 447 business schools (2006-2007 participants), national standardized business test (ETS Business Test) results placed Maranatha’s accounting management majors in the top 25 percent in eight business disciplines including accounting (top 5%). Business management majors were in the top 25 percent in seven disciplines including management (top 20%). Marketing management majors were in the top 25 percent in six disciplines including marketing. Further, business interns exceeded employment supervisors’ expectations related to their general business knowledge.

The ability to solve management problems demands strong critical thinking skills. The College collects freshmen and senior test results for the college-level critical thinking skills component of the national Measures of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) test. Critical thinking scores increased significantly during business students’ four-year programs from 112.1 as freshmen to 114.9 as seniors (p < .10 for the statistically minded). And while employers of interns gave students high marks for their general business knowledge, they rated their problem-solving skills even higher (p < .10).

Business leaders value communication skills possessed by both their seasoned professionals and their college recruits. Department faculty members press their students to excel in their writing abilities. Maranatha’s 2007-2008 seniors from all programs of study received MAPP writing scores in the top 17% among U.S. college seniors. While freshmen business students’ writing scores on the test are significantly below the average for all freshmen entering the College (p < .10), they are virtually equal when they conclude as seniors—an excellent reflection on the quality of their development. While generally more subjective in nature, assessment of business graduates’ oral communication skills revealed high-level skills in both prepared presentations and extemporaneous speaking opportunities.

Business professionals of the 21st Century become experts in using technology. Five-year averages for Maranatha business students on the ETS Business Test place them in the top 50% in each of nine disciplines. Beginning in 2006, the test designers initiated a new section specifically assessing information systems knowledge. Cumulative results through May 2008 identified information systems as Maranatha business seniors’ strongest overall discipline with national rankings in the top 15% among more than 37,000 students from other institutions (2006-2007 participants). Internship employment supervisors rated interns’ skills using spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software as exceptional.

Business knowledge and skills in problem-solving, communication and technology prepare graduates to succeed in their careers and in pursuit of advanced education. Of the 25 business graduates in May 2008, 23 have gained or are pursuing employment in their fields of study; two are pursuing law enforcement careers that typically require completion of a college degree. Exit surveys received from the graduates report a confident assurance that the men and women of the class of 2008 believe they have gained the necessary educational training required to enter both their business vocations and their graduate education programs.

Paul Shirk ('08)

At the May 2008 Commencement service, Paul received the Department of Business's second Student Achievement Award. A statement of Paul's qualifications as stated by the faculty follows.

Autumn Byers ('07)

At the May 2007 Commencement service, Autumn received the Department of Business's first Student Achievement Award. A statement of Autumn's qualifications as stated by the faculty follows.

"The Department of Business recognizes Miss Autumn Rose Byers as the 2007 Student Achievement Award recipient. As a Marketing Management major, Miss Byers earned a grade point average of 3.58 while maintaining an active extracurricular schedule and gaining the respect of her peers and professors. Miss Byers served as a Team Captain both in soccer and softball, participating all four years in intercollegiate athletics while pursuing her education. She serves in the music and children’s ministries at the First Baptist Church of Hartford, Wisconsin. Her fellow seniors gave her strong endorsement when senior capstone project Team Leaders were nominated. Miss Byers performed admirably in this function. The faculty is pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the Student Achievement Award, Miss Autumn Rose Byers."

Dominic Lucente ('98)

Dominic and Meredith welcomed son Jack on 10/06/2007. Dominic says, "I can't believe God saw fit to make me a Dad!! Life as I knew it is over, and I couldn't be happier. Jack is now six months old and we have our hands full. He is crawling, playing, laughing, crying, and eating. That's usually in the first fifteen minutes of his day. Meredith stays home with Jack and is an exceptional mom. God really wired them differently because I could never do her job. I am still doing financial planning and work is going well." The Lucente's live in Goffstown, NH.
